October 02, 2025 (MLN): Pakistan has placed the modernization of its railway sector at the center of its sustainable transport vision, with a strong focus on upgrading the ML-1 and ML-3 corridors.

These projects, described as critical for boosting regional trade and connectivity while aligning the national network with international standards, were highlighted by Minister of State for Finance and Railways Bilal Azhar Kayani at the Global Rail Conference and Exhibition 2025 in Abu Dhabi.

The three-day event, held from 30 September to 2 October, has brought together transport ministers, policymakers, and industry leaders from across the world to shape the future of rail and infrastructure. Leading the Pakistan delegation, Kayani participated in the high-level Ministerial Panel Discussion on “Building Connected Nations: The Role of Transport and Infrastructure in Sustainable Development.”

In his remarks, he emphasized the central role of modern transport infrastructure in driving sustainable economic prosperity.

“It goes without saying that infrastructure and economic prosperity are intertwined,” he noted, underlining how robust connectivity can unlock growth, create jobs, and strengthen regional integration.

He cited Pakistan’s infrastructure achievements, particularly the construction of a vast motorway network that has enhanced provincial connectivity and boosted freight movement nationwide.

Outlining Pakistan’s broader vision, Kayani said the country is working to transform its railway sector into an efficient, reliable, and environmentally sustainable backbone of national transport.

On the sidelines of the conference, the minister held a series of engagements with key international stakeholders to explore collaborative opportunities in rail and infrastructure development.

He met with Etihad Rail CEO Shadi Malak to discuss potential cooperation in freight logistics, technological exchange, and network development. Kayani also visited the exhibition stalls of Etihad Rail and Hafeet Rail to gain insights into regional innovations in railway infrastructure.

Pakistan’s active participation at the Global Rail Conference 2025 reflects its strong commitment to advancing sustainable transport solutions and forging strategic international partnerships that support long-term economic growth and connectivity.
