Govt proposes Rs4,500 per maund indicative wheat price for 2027

October 23, 2026 (MLN): The government has proposed an
indicative wheat price of Rs4,500 per maund for 2027, Rs1,000 higher than last
year’s level, in a bid to encourage cultivation, safeguard farmers’ incomes and
strengthen food security.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said the
proposed price is meant to ease the burden on growers who are dealing with
elevated production costs, rising petroleum prices and inflationary pressures, according
to a press release issued.
The government expects the higher
price to help farmers recover their cultivation costs and earn reasonable
margins, which in turn should encourage them to bring more land under wheat and
lift domestic output in the coming season.
This would improve the prospects of a
stronger sowing season and higher production in 2027.
Shehbaz Sharif said the agriculture
sector has struggled financially in recent years because of inflation and
mounting input costs.
He added that Pakistan had to import
wheat over the past two years, which underlined the need to build up local
production.
The prime minister said the decision
aims to improve food security, support domestic wheat production and bring
greater stability to the farm sector.
He described it as part of wider
efforts to improve farmers’ economic conditions, steady the agricultural
economy and reduce reliance on imported wheat.
Shehbaz Sharif credited the guidance
of President Asif Ali Zardari and former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, along
with consultations with the chief ministers of Punjab and Sindh.
He thanked Punjab Chief Minister
Maryam Nawaz in particular for her cooperation and suggestions during the
process, and also expressed appreciation for the support of Sindh Chief
Minister Murad Ali Shah.
