July 22, 2025 (MLN): Pakistan has demanded that the Global North take responsibility for its role in the climate crisis and deliver on its $100 billion annual pledge to vulnerable nations.

Speaking at the event titled “Practical Action for Environmental Protection: Progress on Climate Change Direction in Pakistan,” organized by CARE for South Asia, Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal said that countries like Pakistan, despite contributing the least to global emissions, are facing the most severe consequences of climate change.

He pointed to the 2022 floods as a devastating reminder of these impacts, noting the immense losses in human life, economic output, agriculture, and infrastructure, said a press release issued today.

Iqbal highlighted Pakistan’s geographical vulnerability, home to over 7,000 glaciers that are melting at an alarming rate, threatening the Indus River Basin and the country’s water, food, and energy security.

He stated that developed nations must now honor their financial, technical, and institutional commitments, and shift the burden of responsibility back to those most accountable.

“The world has long demanded ‘do more’ from the Global South; the time has come to demand that the Global North ‘do more’ for climate justice,” he said.

Climate action has been placed at the core of the government’s national development agenda under its “5Es” strategy.

In closing, the Minister urged the international community to take concrete steps to ensure a just, sustainable, and resilient future for all.
