Pakistan Railways revamps station hygiene

December 31, 2025 (MLN): Pakistan Railways has taken
a step towards improving passenger services by entering into agreements with
five waste management bodies to upgrade sanitation standards at key railway
stations nationwide.
The agreements have been finalized with the Sindh Solid
Waste Management Board, Rawalpindi Waste Management Company, Lahore Waste
Management Company, Faisalabad Waste Management Company and Multan Waste
Management Company, according to Wealth Pakistan.
Under the arrangements, these organizations will oversee
cleanliness operations at major stations in Karachi, Rawalpindi, Lahore,
Faisalabad and Multan, APP reported.
The contracted firms will be responsible for maintaining
hygiene across platforms, parking areas, washrooms, washing lines, platform
sheds and ceiling fans.
Their duties also include the timely removal of stagnant
water from station premises to prevent unsanitary conditions.
A senior Pakistan Railways official told Wealth Pakistan
that the initiative is aimed at creating a healthier and more pleasant
environment at busy railway stations that cater to thousands of passengers each
day.
He said cleaner platforms, well-kept waiting areas and
hygienic washrooms would greatly enhance passenger comfort while improving the
overall image of rail travel.
The official added that proper waste disposal and drainage
would help reduce health hazards, especially during the monsoon season when
poor sanitation can lead to the spread of diseases.
By outsourcing sanitation work to specialized waste
management companies, Pakistan Railways expects to benefit from their trained
workforce, modern equipment and established operational systems.
He noted that the move would also ease the administrative
workload on the railways department, enabling it to concentrate more on key
areas such as safety, punctuality and service quality.
Improved cleanliness, he said, could attract more passengers
to rail travel, boosting ridership and revenue, while supporting the
government’s broader agenda of modernizing public transport and encouraging
environmentally sustainable practices.
