Pakistan, QatarEnergy to discuss LNG supply cuts amid weaker demand

October 22, 2025 (MLN): Pakistan and  QatarEnergy are planning key talks for next week as Pakistan seeks to scale back liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports for next year amid weakening domestic demand, as Bloomberg reported.

QatarEnergy is scheduled to meet representatives from Pakistan State Oil (PSO)  on Monday and Tuesday to review  request to delay or resell around two dozen LNG cargoes on the international market.

While the meeting is part of regular planning for next year’s supply, traders are closely watching the outcome given the size of the reduction Pakistan is proposing. 

Qatar is Pakistan’s largest LNG supplier under long-term contracts.

Pakistan’s gas and power consumption has dipped after the government increased domestic energy prices to meet International Monetary Fund (IMF) conditions, a move aimed at curbing mounting utility debts.

 A rapid expansion of solar power generation has also reduced gas demand.

Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik told Bloomberg that Pakistan’s state-run importer is coordinating with Qatar on the matter, adding that the government aims to finalize its LNG supply plan for 2026 by November 15.
