March 18, 2026 (MLN): Pakistan and China are moving into a new phase of strategic and economic collaboration under China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) 2.0, with a strong focus on industry, agriculture, and mining, said newly appointed Chinese Consul General in Lahore, Sun Yan.
Speaking at the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) during the concluding ceremony of a three-month Chinese language course for business professionals.
He emphasized that developing human capital particularly
individuals proficient in the Chinese language will be essential to fully
capitalize on growing trade and investment opportunities between the two
countries.
He noted that as CPEC progresses into its next phase, demand
for professionals familiar with Chinese language and culture will increase
significantly, as effective communication remains key to enhancing business
collaboration and mutual understanding.
The event was attended by LCCI President Faheem Ur Rehman
Saigol, Chinese Commercial Consul Li Haoteng, LCCI Vice President Khurram Lodhi,
and Executive Committee members including Firdos Nisar, Ahad Amin Malik,
Karamat Ali Awan, Abdul Majeed, and Amir Ali, according to APP.
In his address, Saigol described Pakistan-China relations as
a time-tested partnership built on trust, sincerity, and consistent support,
adding that CPEC has elevated bilateral ties into a comprehensive strategic
partnership encompassing trade, investment, infrastructure, technology, and
people-to-people linkages.
He highlighted that China remains Pakistan’s largest trading
partner but pointed out a notable trade imbalance, with Pakistan’s exports to
China standing at approximately $2.5bn compared to imports of around $16.3bn.
He stressed the need for corrective measures and expressed
optimism that Pakistani exporters can better leverage the China-Pakistan Free
Trade Agreement with facilitation from the Chinese Consulate.
Saigol identified key sectors with strong export potential,
including agriculture, food processing, minerals, seafood, surgical
instruments, sports goods, textiles, leather products, and IT services.
He added that improved market access, enhanced certification
systems, and stronger business-to-business linkages could significantly boost
Pakistan’s exports to China.
He further emphasized that Pakistan offers attractive
investment opportunities in information technology, renewable energy,
agriculture, electric vehicles, textiles, and value-added manufacturing.
Special Economic Zones developed under CPEC were highlighted
as ideal platforms for Chinese companies to expand globally while benefiting
from Pakistan’s strategic location.
Addressing global economic challenges, Saigol noted that
rising geopolitical tensions have created uncertainty in international markets
and underscored the importance of stability, cooperation, and diplomacy for
sustainable growth.
He also appreciated the Chinese Consulate’s continued
support in facilitating the business community, particularly through
initiatives such as Chinese language training programs.
LCCI Vice President Khurram Lodhi termed such language
programs highly beneficial, stating that they enhance communication with
Chinese counterparts and create new opportunities for trade, investment, and
joint ventures under CPEC 2.0.
Congratulating the course participants, Consul General Sun
Yan praised their dedication to learning Chinese alongside their professional
commitments, calling it a forward-looking step toward deeper economic
engagement.
He reiterated that Pakistan and China share an “all-weather
strategic cooperative partnership,” characterized by high-level coordination,
mutual respect, and shared development objectives.
He also highlighted major infrastructure projects such as Gwadar
Port, the Karakoram Highway, and the year-round opening of the Khunjerab Pass,
noting that these initiatives are significantly improving regional connectivity
and facilitating trade.
He acknowledged the proactive role of LCCI in promoting
Pakistan-China economic relations and supporting the business community through
skill development initiatives.
Highlighting the broader significance of bilateral ties, he
noted that 2026 marks the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between
Pakistan and China, expressing confidence that the enduring partnership will
continue to grow stronger and deliver greater economic benefits for both
nations.
