PKR’s winning run stretches to 160 sessions versus USD

May 15, 2026 (MLN): The Pakistani rupee continued its extraordinary winning run on Friday, appreciating for the 160th consecutive session against the US dollar.

In the interbank market, the local unit strengthened by 1.14 paisa to settle at PKR 278.61 per dollar, compared to the previous closing of 278.62.

Throughout the session, the currency touched an intraday high bid of 278.80 and a low ask of 278.60.

In the open market, exchange companies quoted the dollar at 278.80 for buying and 279.70 for selling.

The 160-session winning streak has seen the rupee accumulate a total gain of Rs2.8147, or 1.01%, against the greenback.

On a broader timeline, PKR has risen by Rs1.51 or 0.54% since the start of the calendar year, while gains for the current fiscal year stand at Rs5.15 or 1.85% against the dollar.

Friday's strength was broad-based, with the rupee posting gains across all major tracked currencies.

Against the euro, PKR rose by 1.99 rupees or 0.61% to close at 324.25, compared to 326.24 in the previous session.

The local unit recorded its sharpest move against the British pound, gaining 4.11 rupees or 1.09% to close at 372.29 versus 376.40 a day earlier.

Against the Swiss franc, PKR appreciated by 1.47 rupees or 0.41% to settle at 354.76.

In Asian currencies, the rupee gained 0.61 paisa or 0.35% against the Japanese yen to close at 1.7584, compared to 1.7645 in the prior session.

Against the Chinese yuan, PKR increased by 9.22 paisa or 0.22% to close at 40.96 from 41.05. Gains against Gulf currencies were modest, with the rupee rising 1.09 paisa or 0.01% against the Saudi riyal to 74.25, and edging up 0.21 paisa against the UAE dirham to close at 75.86.

In the domestic money market, the benchmark 6-month Karachi Interbank Bid and Offer rates rose by 5 basis points, with the bid rate settling at 12.00% and the offer rate at 12.25%.
