PKR strengthens further against USD

June 01, 2026 (MLN): The Pakistani rupee continued its gradual upward trajectory against the US dollar on Monday, posting a modest gain in the interbank market amid stable foreign exchange conditions.
The local currency appreciated by 2.91 paisa, or 0.01%, to
close at PKR 278.47 per US dollar, compared with the previous session's
closing level of PKR 278.50.
During the trading session, the rupee moved within a narrow
range, touching an intraday high of PKR 278.65 and a low of PKR 278.45 against
the greenback, reflecting relative stability in the foreign exchange market.
In the open market, exchange companies quoted the US dollar
at PKR 278.00 for buying and PKR 279.55 for selling.
Despite strengthening against the dollar, the rupee showed
mixed performance against other major international currencies.
The local unit weakened against the euro, ending the session
at PKR 324.66, while it also lost ground against the British pound, which
settled at PKR 375.03.
Similarly, the rupee depreciated against the Swiss franc to
PKR 355.54 and edged lower against the Chinese yuan to PKR 41.16.
On the other hand, the domestic currency recorded gains
against several regional currencies.
The rupee appreciated against the Japanese yen, closing at
PKR 1.7464, while it also strengthened versus the Saudi riyal and UAE dirham to
settle at PKR 74.21 and PKR 75.82, respectively.
The latest advance further reinforces the rupee’s positive
performance during the current fiscal year. Since the start of FY26, the local
currency has appreciated by PKR 5.29, representing a gain of 1.90%
against the US dollar.
On a calendar-year basis, the rupee has strengthened by PKR
1.65, or 0.59%, highlighting its resilience despite global currency
market volatility.
Meanwhile, activity in the money market remained largely
stable, with the benchmark six-month Karachi Interbank Bid and Offer rates
easing by 2 basis points to 12.23% and 12.48%, respectively.
