PKR posts slight gain vs USD

May 06, 2026 (MLN): Extending its gradual upward trend, the Pakistani rupee (PKR) posted a marginal gain of 2.83 paisa against the US dollar in Wednesday’s interbank session, closing at PKR 278.72.

During the trading session, the local unit touched an intraday high (bid) of 278.80 and a low (ask) of 278.70, reflecting a narrow trading band amid subdued market activity.

In the open market, exchange companies quoted the dollar at PKR 279.00 for buying and PKR 279.80 for selling.

However, the rupee showed a mixed performance against other major currencies, weakening across the board. It depreciated by 1.25 rupees (0.38%) against the Euro to settle at 327.17, compared to 325.92 a day earlier.

Similarly, the local currency lost 1.59 rupees (0.42%) against the British Pound, closing at 379.05 versus the previous 377.46.

Against the Swiss Franc, PKR declined by 1.33 rupees (0.37%) to end at 357.22.

The rupee also weakened against the Japanese Yen, falling by 1.24 paisa (0.70%) to close at 1.7850 compared to 1.7726 in the prior session.

Likewise, it depreciated by 8.30 paisa (0.20%) against the Chinese Yuan, settling at 40.89 from 40.81.

On the other hand, the rupee posted slight gains against Gulf currencies. It appreciated by 2.14 paisa (0.03%) against the Saudi Riyal to close at 74.28, while inching up by 0.47 paisa (0.01%) against the UAE Dirham to settle at 75.89.

On a cumulative basis, the rupee has strengthened by 5.04 rupees (1.81%) against the US dollar so far in the current fiscal year, while it has gained 1.40 rupees (0.50%) since the start of the calendar year.

Meanwhile, in the money market, the benchmark 6-month Karachi Interbank Bid and Offer rates edged up by 1 basis point to 11.73% and 11.98%, respectively, indicating slight tightening in short-term liquidity conditions.
