PKR extends winning streak against USD

May 22, 2026 (MLN): The Pakistani rupee extended its gaining streak against the US dollar on Friday, appreciating by 2.80 paisa or 0.01% in the interbank market to close at PKR 278.52 per USD, compared to the previous session’s closing of PKR 278.55.

During the trading session, the local currency touched an intraday high of PKR 278.94 and a low of PKR 278.50 against the greenback.

In the open market, exchange companies quoted the dollar at PKR 278.70 for buying and PKR 279.60 for selling.

The rupee also posted gains against most major international currencies. Against the Euro, the local unit appreciated by 42.25 paisa or 0.13% to settle at PKR 323.28 versus PKR 323.70 a day earlier.

Similarly, the rupee strengthened against the British Pound by 51.12 paisa or 0.14%, closing at PKR 373.99 compared to the previous rate of PKR 374.50.

Against the Japanese Yen, PKR improved by 0.21 paisa or 0.12% to close at PKR 1.7503, while it also gained 1.34 paisa or 0.02% against the Saudi Riyal to settle at PKR 74.22.

The local currency further edged up by 0.97 paisa or 0.01% against the UAE Dirham, ending the session at PKR 75.84.

However, the rupee recorded minor losses against a few currencies, weakening by 14.45 paisa or 0.04% against the Swiss Franc to PKR 354.24, while slipping 2.00 paisa or 0.05% against the Chinese Yuan to close at PKR 40.99.

On a broader scale, the rupee has appreciated by PKR 5.24 or 1.88% against the US dollar during the ongoing fiscal year. On a calendar-year basis, the local currency has gained PKR 1.60 or 0.57%.

Meanwhile, in the money market, the benchmark six-month Karachi Interbank Bid and Offer rates increased by 6 basis points to 12.34% and 12.59%, respectively.
