August 22, 2025 (MLN): The government's upcoming National Industrial Policy is
set to breathe life into struggling industries through the revival of sick
industrial units, easier access to credit, reforms in bankruptcy laws, and
stronger investor protection.
Central to the
framework is the creation of a National Industrial Revival Commission,
which will oversee implementation and provide a dedicated redressal mechanism
for industrial complaints.
The policy’s contours
were discussed in a high-level meeting chaired by Special Assistant to the
Prime Minister on Industries and Production Haroon Akhtar Khan, attended by
Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, Federal Minister for Power Division Sardar
Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari, the Chairman of FBR, and the Governor of the State
Bank of Pakistan.
Discussions focused on
reducing the cost of power, promoting renewable energy, upgrading transmission
and distribution systems, and ensuring long-term sustainability for the
industrial sector.
Haroon Akhtar Khan
emphasized that the new policy, developed in consultation with both public and
private stakeholders, reflects the vision of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to
make industry a driver of growth and exports.
He added that strict contract enforcement
would be ensured, while one-window services in Special Economic Zones (SEZs)
inspired by the Chinese model would streamline operations and reduce
bureaucratic delays.
Federal Minister for
Power Division stressed that energy sector reforms would significantly cut
costs and bring relief to industries.
He said enhanced
reliance on green energy and improved infrastructure would not only lower
production expenses but also safeguard the environment.
The new National
Industrial Policy lays out a five-year roadmap to place industries on
stable foundations, expand exports, and generate employment, representing a
decisive step toward Pakistan’s industrial revival.
