July 28, 2026 (MLN): Pakistan
is exploring the import of approximately one million tonnes of wheat after
provincial demand for stocks held by Passco was found to exceed available
supplies.
Federal Minister for National Food
Security and Research, Rana Tanveer Hussain, highlighted while chairing a
high-level meeting of the Wheat Board, said a press release issued.
The import volume has been calculated
based on requirements submitted by the provinces, with the move aimed at
ensuring uninterrupted wheat supplies and safeguarding national food security.
The meeting was attended by Secretary
of the Ministry of National Food Security and Research, Amer Ali Ahmed, the
PM's Coordinator on Agriculture, agriculture and food secretaries from all
provinces, representatives from Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu & Kashmir,
senior ministry officials, representatives of the Pakistan Flour Mills
Association, and other stakeholders.
The Minister said all provinces would
be taken fully into confidence throughout the import process, particularly on
quality specifications for the imported wheat, and that distribution would be
carried out strictly in line with each province's requirements to ensure
transparency, fairness and equitable allocation.
Rana Tanveer Hussain reaffirmed the
government's commitment to working closely with all federating units to
maintain a stable wheat supply, protect consumer interests and ensure timely
availability of wheat nationwide, directing relevant authorities to complete
all necessary arrangements efficiently and in coordination with the provinces.
This follows the government’s
earlier commitment to release wheat stocks to the provinces under the MoUs
signed with the Pakistan Agricultural Storage and Services Corporation
(PASSCO), assuring that additional supplies will be made available whenever
required to meet emerging demand.
