April 15, 2026 (MLN): Karachi Port is undergoing a major phase of operational and infrastructural upgrades as the government accelerates reforms aimed at turning Pakistan’s seaports into regional trade and logistics hubs, Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Junaid Anwar Chaudhry said on Tuesday.
Speaking at a ceremony marking the dredging of berths and
navigation channels at Karachi Gateway Terminal Limited (KGTL), the minister
said ongoing improvements at Karachi Port show a broader strategy focused on
modernization, efficiency enhancement, and trade facilitation for the business
community.
He highlighted that Pakistan’s port sector is witnessing
steady progress in key areas including dredging, transshipment handling,
bunkering services, and terminal optimization, all designed to strengthen the
country’s position in regional maritime trade routes, according to APP.
The minister noted strong momentum in bunkering operations,
stating that more than 100 vessels have been serviced in recent months. He also
pointed to the gradual shift from VLSFO sales toward direct marine fuel supply,
which is expected to support growth in Pakistan’s refining and energy supply
chain.
Beyond cargo handling, Karachi Port is expanding maritime
support services, including crew change facilities and low-cost medical
services for merchant seafarers, aimed at improving its competitiveness as a
regional shipping hub.
He further said that following the closure of the Strait of
Hormuz, Karachi Port successfully managed its first major transshipment
movement, signaling rising operational importance for Karachi Port, Port Qasim,
and Gwadar Port in global shipping routes.
To reduce congestion and improve cargo flow, transshipment
charges have been cut by up to 60%, while a new feeder service has been
launched from KGTL. In addition, 20 ad hoc vessels are being arranged to ease
container backlog and improve cargo handling efficiency.
Chairman Karachi Port Trust Rear Admiral (Retd) Shahid Ahmed
said dredging of navigation channels, expansion of storage capacity, and
improvements in turnaround time are being implemented to translate the reform
agenda into measurable operational gains. He added that off-dock facilities
have also been authorized to support transshipment activity.
He also acknowledged the role of Pakistan Customs and the
Federal Board of Revenue in accelerating reforms through timely regulatory
adjustments and amendments.
Earlier, KGTL CEO Khurram Aziz appreciated the support of
the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Karachi Port Trust in advancing dredging
and channel expansion, which will allow larger vessels to dock and improve
overall terminal efficiency.
