May 17, 2026 (MLN): Karachi’s jewelry trade has reaffirmed its full support for the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) in the fight against smuggling, money laundering, corruption, and other financial crimes that harm the national economy.
The assurance was conveyed during a meeting between
representatives of Sarafa Bazaar Karachi, led by All Pakistan Sarafa Gems and
Jewelers Association President Qasim Shikarpuri, and the Director FIA Karachi
Zone regarding issues arising from the recent operation conducted in the market,
according to the press release.
During the meeting, the FIA Karachi director warmly welcomed
the delegation and listened to the representatives in detail.
Concerns raised by the Association regarding the procedure
adopted during the operation, as well as the conduct of certain officials
appearing in social media video clips, were discussed thoroughly.
The Association noted that prior to the meeting, the FIA
leadership had already taken notice of the conduct in question on its own
initiative and had suspended the concerned officer while also initiating a
formal inquiry.
The delegation appreciated the prompt, transparent, and
institutionally accountable response of the FIA Karachi Zone leadership and
acknowledged the professional and impartial conduct of the director.
The Association stated that the overwhelming majority of
Karachi’s jewelers and bullion traders are law-abiding professionals who
honestly contribute to the documented economy.
It added that action against a small number of illegal
elements is also in the interest of legitimate businesses, as smuggling and
undocumented trade not only damage the national economy but also create unfair
market conditions for lawful traders.
The jewelry body assured the FIA of its full cooperation and
support in eliminating such elements from the market.
In response, the Director FIA Karachi Zone assured the
delegation that legitimate traders and their lawful businesses would be
protected at all costs.
He further stated that action would only be taken against
individuals involved in illegal activities on the basis of verified evidence
and in accordance with legal requirements, while the FIA’s doors would remain
open to the business community for any genuine complaints.
Both sides agreed to maintain continued and constructive
engagement in the future to promote a transparent business environment where
honest trade remains protected and financial crimes find no safe haven.
The Association also thanked the Director FIA Karachi Zone
and his team for addressing the matter promptly, courteously, and seriously,
while reiterating its commitment to stand alongside the FIA in serving the
country and safeguarding the economy.
