Govt warns sugar mills of crackdown over price manipulation

July 23,2025(MLN): The government has warned of strict action against sugar mills flouting the officially notified ex-mill price of Rs165 per kilogram, following reports of non-compliance and artificial inflation in the market.

The warning followed a high-level meeting led by the Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research.

Participants included representatives of Pakistan Sugar Mills Association (PSMA), provincial agriculture departments, and key industry stakeholders.

The minister expressed serious concern over the failure of several mills to adhere to the regulated price, stressing that profiteering and market manipulation would not be tolerated, said a press release.

He cautioned the PSMA that failure to ensure compliance among its members would trigger a countrywide crackdown on overpricing and other illegal practices.

All provinces were directed to submit compliance reports within 24 hours and intensify district-level monitoring.

The ministry also announced plans to work closely with the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) and provincial food authorities to initiate legal action against violators.

Further reaffirming its commitment to consumer protection and price stability, the government urged all stakeholders to act responsibly and support efforts to ensure fair supply and pricing of sugar across the country.
