January 29, 2026 (MLN): The government is reviewing energy costs and other factors affecting the cost of doing business for export-oriented industries, with particular focus on the textile sector, as part of efforts to support sustainability, competitiveness and export growth within the ongoing economic reform framework.
This was stated by Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue
Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb during an interaction with representatives of the
All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA), where the government reaffirmed
its continued engagement to address challenges facing the textile industry.
The sector was described as a cornerstone of Pakistan’s
economy due to its contribution to exports, employment and industrial activity.
The finance minister said energy affordability and
reliability remain key priorities and that options are being examined in
consultation with relevant ministries and stakeholders to improve efficiency
while ensuring fiscal responsibility and long-term system sustainability, according to the press release.
He added that immediate issues requiring attention are being
reviewed on priority, while broader policy matters will be taken forward
through established budgetary and reform mechanisms.
The government also reiterated its commitment to maintaining
a fair and predictable policy environment, emphasizing equity, transparency and
broad-based participation across the economy.
Efforts are underway to address genuine concerns of
compliant sectors through consultation and institutional processes as
structural reforms advance.
Issues related to operational constraints and supply-side
challenges in certain industrial areas were discussed, with assurances that
coordination with relevant authorities would continue to ensure smooth
industrial operations.
The importance of constructive engagement between the
government and industry was highlighted amid evolving domestic and
international economic conditions.
APTMA representatives briefed the government on pressures
faced by textile exporters due to rising input costs and changing global market
dynamics.
The delegation highlighted challenges related to energy
costs, regulatory compliance and taxation, noting that cumulative cost
pressures affect competitiveness in export markets, and stressed the need for
policy consistency and continued dialogue to enable planning and investment
with confidence.
The delegation included APTMA Chairman Kamran Arshad, Chairman North Zone Asad Shafi, and Senior Vice Chairman Muhammad Jamil Qassim.
Vice Chairmen Shahzad Ahmed Sheikh and Siddique Javed Bhatti were also part of
the delegation, along with former chairmen Aamir Fayyaz Sheikh and Rahim Nasir.
Other members included Senior Member Khurram Inam, Secretary General Raza Baqir, Energy Advisor Asim Riaz, and Senior Economist Syed Absar Ali. Senior officials from the Finance and Revenue Division and the Power Division were also present.
