March 16, 2026 (MLN): Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed relevant authorities to closely monitor the supply and demand of food commodities across the country to ensure Pakistan’s food security and prevent any shortages.
Chairing a high-level meeting in Lahore to review the
national food situation, the prime minister emphasized the importance of
maintaining adequate availability of essential food items while also exploring
export opportunities for surplus produce.
During the meeting, officials informed the premier that
Pakistan currently possesses sufficient stocks of key food commodities and
there is no immediate shortage of essential goods in the domestic market.
The prime minister noted that disruptions in global supply
chains have created fresh opportunities for Pakistani agricultural products to
enter regional markets.
He stressed that Pakistan must capitalize on these
developments by expanding exports while safeguarding domestic consumption.
Shehbaz Sharif specifically instructed authorities to
prioritize food supply for Gulf countries, highlighting their importance as key
trading partners.
He directed to design a comprehensive strategy for exporting
surplus food items to Gulf markets without compromising Pakistan’s own food
requirements.
The PM also emphasized the need to maintain strict quality
standards for food products exported to friendly Gulf states, ensuring
Pakistani goods remain competitive in international markets.
To improve export logistics, he instructed the Pakistan
National Shipping Corporation to take necessary measures to facilitate the
shipment of food products to Gulf countries via sea routes.
Officials at the meeting highlighted that Pakistan’s
agricultural sector including crops, meat, poultry, dairy products, and seafood
holds significant export potential if supported by effective policies and
logistics, according to Radio Pakistan.
To ensure close monitoring of the food situation, the prime
minister ordered the formation of a committee tasked with reviewing supply
levels and market conditions on a daily basis.
He also directed Pakistani ambassadors and trade officers
stationed in Gulf countries to actively promote the country’s agricultural
exports and strengthen trade ties in the region.
The move is aimed at boosting Pakistan’s export revenues while maintaining stable domestic food supplies.
