April 7, 2026 (MLN): China has introduced a comprehensive feasibility study and pre-project assessment for a space-based intelligent computing constellation, signaling a major step toward advancing global computing infrastructure.

The initiative, led by the State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense, aims to overcome limitations of terrestrial data centers while providing seamless global coverage and real-time processing capabilities.

Yu Guobin, deputy director of the administration's commercial space department, declared the initiative at the 2026 Space Computing Industry Conference in Beijing.

He stated that the administration has organized the project’s kick-off meeting and convened expert panels, with work proceeding in an orderly manner, according to APP.

Space-based computing involves deploying computational capacity in orbit, enabling continuous global coverage through satellite networks.

Compared with ground-based data centers, this approach offers significant advantages in real-time responsiveness and wide-area accessibility.

Yu emphasized the strategic necessity of developing space-based computing, noting that it is key to overcoming bottlenecks in terrestrial computing and ensuring sustainable growth of the digital economy.

Traditional data centers face constraints including high energy consumption, limited land resources, expensive cooling, and restricted coverage, making them insufficient to meet the growing demand for ultra-large-scale, environmentally sustainable computing power.

In contrast, space-based computing provides a zero-carbon, sustainable, and widely accessible solution.

Currently, satellites collect massive amounts of data but have limited onboard processing capabilities.

Most raw data must be transmitted to ground stations for analysis, creating severe bandwidth limitations and resulting in utilization of real-time processed data at less than ten percent.

Space-based computing addresses this issue by enabling intelligent on-orbit processing, reducing data transmission latency from hours to seconds.

Xie Lina, deputy director of the data center department at the Cloud Computing and Big Data Research Institute under the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology, explained that computing satellites can form laser communication links to achieve seamless global coverage and process data directly in orbit.

This capability dramatically reduces latency for applications such as disaster early warning, resource monitoring, and environmental observation, which would otherwise be impossible with ground-based systems.

Yu highlighted that space-based computing is essential for building a global ubiquitous computing network and supporting national strategies.

Applications requiring low-latency, highly reliable services including emergency response, marine observation, and polar expeditions stand to benefit from this technology.

According to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, China is actively cultivating a space computing industrial ecosystem.

The ministry is supporting forward-looking research, gradually establishing standards covering hardware, software, networking, and security, and promoting the development of technologies such as radiation-resistant space chips and inter-satellite laser communications.

This initiative positions China at the forefront of space computing, promising transformative impacts on data-driven industries, national security, and the global digital economy.
