July 23,2025(MLN): The Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP) has reported that its Market Intelligence Unit (MIU) achieved an impressive 92% efficiency rate in processing and referring leads related to anti-competitive practices during the fiscal year 2024–25.

This achievement emphasizes the MIU’s growing significance in supporting CCP’s enforcement efforts and ensuring fair competition across Pakistan’s evolving market landscape.

Over the past year, the MIU identified more than 170 potential cases of anti-competitive behavior spanning various sectors.

These leads were referred to the relevant departments for further action, resulting in five formal inquiries initiated by the Cartels and Trade Abuses (C&TA) Department under Section 37(1) of the Competition Act, 2010, and 28 inquiries launched by the Office of Fair Trade (OFT).

Additionally, all five merger-related leads flagged by the MIU involved consummated mergers, prompting detailed scrutiny and potential enforcement measures.

The MIU’s performance was bolstered by the strategic use of artificial intelligence (AI) and advanced digital tools, including web scraping techniques and the application of Google Cloud Vision AI and Microsoft Azure AI, which enabled efficient extraction and analysis of visual and textual market intelligence.

These tools enhanced the unit’s capacity to proactively detect collusion, deceptive marketing practices, and abuse of dominance.

The MIU continues to serve as a key pillar in CCP’s enforcement framework by providing actionable intelligence that not only triggers investigations but also informs sectoral studies and policy direction.

Its insights have also played a vital role in initiating advocacy campaigns and helping the Commission anticipate potential market distortions and emerging threats to competition.
