July 28, 2025(MLN): Australia has proposed a stronger role in Pakistan’s mining sector by focusing on the Reko Diq project, including advanced training programs and deeper collaboration to support its development.

Both countries have agreed to strengthen cooperation in energy, minerals, and water resource management.

The Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) is playing a key role in streamlining processes for Australian companies investing in Pakistan’s mining and energy sectors.

The Reko Diq Project in Balochistan is set to commence production in 2028 with an initial ore processing capacity of 45 million tonnes per annum, followed by an expansion to 90mn tonnes per annum from 2034 onwards.

Lately, to advance its development, Barrick Gold has finalized a $440 million agreement with Japan’s Komatsu for the supply of advance mining equipment such as Komatsu 980E-5 haul trucks from Illinois, P&H electric rope shovels from Wisconsin, PC7000-11 excavators from Germany, and WE2350-2 electric wheel loaders from Texas.

The project is expected to enhance Pakistan’s exports, attract foreign investment, and support long-term energy and industrial needs through its significant copper reserves.

It is scheduled to begin construction in 2025 and has the potential to be a major development in Pakistan’s mining sector.
