Asian shares in sober mood as fighting continues in Ukraine

March 21, 2022: Asian share markets started the week in a sober mood on Monday as fighting in Ukraine raged on with no sign of stopping, leaving investors clutching at hopes for an eventual peace deal.
Hong Kong stocks opened sharply higher with the benchmark Hang Seng Index jumped 1.92 percent to 21,823. The Tokyo stock market was closed due to a holiday.
In South Korea, the benchmark KOSPI fell 8.53 points, or 0.32%, to 2,698.49 by 0230 GMT. It gained as much as 0.40% earlier in the session to its highest level since March 4.
U.S. President Joseph Biden will travel to Poland on Friday (March 25) to discuss the international response to "the humanitarian and human rights crisis that Russia’s unjustified and unprovoked war on Ukraine has created," White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said.
