January 20, 2026 (MLN): Asian markets turned their attention to China this week as a powerful rally in mainland stocks triggered heightened regulatory scrutiny, following an unprecedented surge in trading activity that has raised concerns over excessive leverage and speculative behavior.

Across the region, attention has centered on strong equity performance in China.

Turnover on the Shanghai, Shenzhen and Beijing stock exchanges climbed to record levels for three consecutive sessions last week, according to data from Wind Information, according to CNBC.

Daily trading volume peaked at 3.99tr yuan ($556bn) on Wednesday, exceeding the previous high of 3.48tr yuan set in October 2024.

The sharp rise in activity comes as China’s benchmark CSI 300 index earlier this year reached its highest level in four years, while also posting its strongest annual gain since 2020.

The rally has fueled optimism among investors, many of whom believe the current uptrend still has room to run.

However, the surge has also revived memories of past market excesses, particularly the 2015 boom-and-bust cycle, prompting authorities to step in to cool sentiment.

Chinese regulators have moved quickly to rein in leverage by tightening margin trading rules across all three mainland exchanges.

Under revised regulations that came into effect on Monday, the minimum margin requirement for new credit-based stock purchases has been raised to 100%, up from 80%.

The change effectively removes borrowing for new margin trades, requiring investors to fully fund share purchases upfront, while existing margin financing arrangements remain unchanged.

The regulatory action suggests growing concern over overheating conditions in China’s onshore equity markets.

The increase has been driven largely by the surge in trading volumes emphasizing heightened participation from retail investors.

Despite the tighter rules, many market participants argue that China’s stock rally remains in an early phase, supported by improving confidence and expectations of continued economic stabilization.

Regulators, however, appear focused on ensuring that gains are sustained without repeating past episodes of extreme volatility.
