Weekly SPI drops by 0.09%

March 07, 2025 (MLN): Pakistan's short-term inflation decreased by 0.09% compared to the previous week, while it fell by 0.87% compared to the same period last year, the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) reported on Friday.

During the week, out of 51 items, prices of 13 (25.49%) items increased, 20 (39.22%) items decreased and 18 (35.29%) items remained stable.

A major increase is observed in the prices of Bananas (9.79%), Sugar (3.15%), LPG (2.64%), Eggs (2.52%), Lawn (0.55%), Mutton (0.33%), Wheat Flour (0.22%), Long Cloth & Gur (0.17%) each, Cigarettes & Beef (0.06%) each and Rice IRRI-6/9 (0.01%).

On the other hand, major decrease is observed in the prices of Onions (5.59%), Tea Lipton (4.47%), Garlic (3.89%), Tomatoes (3.60%), Pulse Gram (3.49%), Pulse Mash (2.82%), Potatoes (2.60%), Diesel (2.00%), Pulse Masoor (1.50%) and Petrol (0.24%).

The year on year trend depicts increase of Ladies Sandal (75.09%), Bananas (30.96%), Pulse Moong (26.90%), Powdered Milk (25.86%), Beef (22.51%), Pulse Gram (21.73%), Vegetable Ghee 1 Kg (16.12%), Vegetable Ghee 2.5 Kg (14.32%), Shirting (14.13%), Eggs (13.52%), Firewood (11.07%) and Georgette (10.89%).

While major decrease of 0.87%, Onions (64.92%), Tomatoes (57.05%), Wheat Flour (36.81%), Chilies Powder (20.00%), Electricity Charges for Q1 (18.92%), Tea Lipton (14.92%), Pulse Mash (14.68%), Pulse Masoor (12.33%), Diesel (9.91%), Rice Basmati Broken (9.55%), Petrol (8.55%) and LPG (2.54%)

The lowest income group experienced a weekly decrease of 0.20%, while the inflation for the highest income group down by 0.03%.

On a yearly basis, analysis of SPI change across different income segments showed that SPI remained across all quantiles ranging between 2.60% and 0.24%.

Yearly SPI for the Lowest Income Group decreased by 2.47% while the highest income group increased by 0.24%.

The average price of Sona urea stood at Rs4,525 per 50 kg bag, down by 0.17% from last week’s price, and a 8.56% decrease from last year.

Meanwhile, the average Cement price fell to Rs1,341 per 50 kg bag, which is 0.42% lower than the previous week, and 8.88% higher than prices last year.

PBS calculates short-term inflation using the SPI on a weekly basis to assess the price movement of essential commodities at shorter interval of time so as to review the price situation in the country.

SPI comprises 51 essential items collected from 50 markets in 17 cities of the country.
