Pakistan accelerates digital economy push after 5G auction

April 3, 2026 (MLN): Pakistan has reaffirmed its commitment to accelerating its digital economy, highlighted by the successful 5G spectrum auction which was a sign of progress and direction.
The government says it is offering full support and facilities to investors in the digital and telecom sectors, aiming to boost innovation, increase foreign investment, and move toward a cashless economy, according to a press release by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
Officials emphasized that expanding high-quality internet services and promoting digitalization will enhance transparency and improve overall economic performance, while the country’s youth are expected to play a central role in driving growth through active participation in IT and digital platforms.
The remarks were made by Shehbaz Sharif during a meeting with Kaan Terzioglu at the Prime Minister’s House, where a delegation from VEON Group called on him.
The prime minister noted that all relevant institutions were working closely with telecom operators to ensure improved service delivery following the 5G auction.
He also stressed that rising interest among young people in telecom and IT is helping attract international investors.
During the meeting, Kaan Terzioglu appreciated the government’s initiatives under the prime minister’s leadership to advance digitalization and promote a cashless economy, and expressed his company’s intention to expand investment in Pakistan.
The meeting was also attended by Muhammad Aurangzeb, Shaza Fatima Khawaja, Ahad Khan Cheema, and Aamir Ibrahim, along with other senior government officials.
