May 31, 2025 (MLN): The market experienced a range-bound performance throughout the week, primarily influenced by uncertainty surrounding potential revenue measures anticipated in the upcoming Federal Budget for Fiscal Year 2026.
Consecutively, the bench mark KSE 100 index gain 588.42 points or 0.49%, closing the session at 119,691.09 compared to the previous week’s close of 119,102.67.
Intraday swings were significant, with the index reaching a high of 119,913.88 (+222.79 points) and a low of 118,143.67 (-1,547.42 points).
Market cap
The KSE-100 market capitalization stood at Rs3.57 trillion, up 0.49% from the previous week’s Rs3.56tr. In USD terms, the market cap was recorded at $12.69 billion, compared to $12.63bn in the prior week.
This week, the index return in USD terms was 0.47%, compared to -0.56% the previous week.
On the economic front, the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) made a net FX purchase of $223 million in February 2025, taking its nine-month total to $5.9 billion.
Money supply in April 2025 rose by 12.96% YoY to Rs42.07tr, compared to Rs37.24tr in April 2024, and up 0.17% MoM from March 2025.
SBP raised Rs187.17bn through a 10-year floating-rate PIBs auction on Tuesday, with Rs175bn from competitive bids and Rs12.17bn from non-competitive bids.
Furthermore, the Central Bank conducted an auction during week, selling Market Treasury Bills (MTBs) worth Rs772.27bn.
Foreign exchange reserves held by the SBP increased by $69.5m to $11.52bn in the week ending May 23, 2025, while total reserves fell by $11.8m to $16.64bn.
SBP declared the June 2025 remuneration rate on Special Cash Reserve Account (US$) at 3.32%.
The positive economic cues helped stabilize investor sentiment, pushing the KSE-100 index’s fiscal year-to-date returns to 52.57%, while CYTD return stood at 3.96%.
Top Index Movers
During the week, Cement, Fertilizer, and Power Generation & Distribution contributed 317.14, 249.85, and 148.20 points to the index.
On the flip side, Automobile Assembler, Oil & Gas Exploration Companies, and Technology & Communication dented the index by -105.08, -96.70, and -50.13 points, respectively.
Among individual stocks, MEBL added 230.44 points to the index while FFC, LUCK, and PKGP contributed to the index by 209.85, 158.71, and 79.67, respectively.
Conversely, UBL, PSO, and SYS eroded -102.13, -68.94, and -64.11 points, respectively.
FIPI/LIPI
This week, foreign investors remained net sellers, offloading equities worth $5.56m.
Foreign Corporates led the selling spree worth $4.34m while Overseas Pakistanis bought equities worth $1.42m.
On the other hand, local investors were net buyers this week, purchasing equities worth $0.33m.
Broker Proprietary Trading and Individuals bought securities worth $4.7m and $1.7m, respectively, while Other Organization sold securities worth $1.24m.
