Water and Power Development Authority has submitted a request to National Electric Power Regulatory to raise the power tariff from the electricity generated from hydel projects. The current tariff has been around Rs 1.88 kilow watt per hour and for the new fiscal year starting July 1, 2017 and ending July 2018, Wapda proposes tariff of Rs 3.61/kwh. The proposal given by Wapda for 2017-18 showed an increase of Rs 1.73 per kwh.
According to the government estimates out of total power generation in the country when rivers off take has been at its optimum level, electricity from hydel ranges from 35 percent to 40 percent from total daily generation. Hydel generation fell during the winter season due to snow fall in the northern part. The recent estimates reveal that generation from hydel during winter season fell to almost 500 megwatt from its capacity of around 5000 megawatt.
