WAPDA plans to double hydel electricity generation capacity to 20,000 MW by 2030

February 08, 2023 (MLN): Pakistan's Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) is aiming to double its hydel electricity generation capacity to 20,000 MW by 2030, according to the organization's Chairman, Engineer Lt Gen Sajjad Ghani (Retd).

During the first Conference of General Managers and Project Directors, the chairman announced that WAPDA would add 10,000 MW of low-cost, green hydel electricity to the country's power generation capacity by 2030.

Progress on under-construction projects was discussed, and ways to effectively implement them were explored during the conference. The chairman emphasized the need for integration within the organization and a collaborative effort to tackle the challenges faced by Pakistan in terms of water, food, and energy security.

Presentations were given by General Managers and Project Directors on various projects, including the Diamer Basha Dam and the Dasu Hydropower Project, among others. The conference provided a platform for the organization's leaders to discuss and plan the future of Pakistan's power generation.

WAPDA's commitment to doubling its hydel electricity generation capacity by 2030 will play a significant role in meeting Pakistan's energy demands while promoting sustainability and environmental protection.

The organization's efforts will also contribute to the country's long-term energy security.
