Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan sign a Joint Protocol on UAP railway project

July 19, 2023 (MLN): A joint protocol for the UAP railway project was signed between Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, and Pakistan on Tuesday to facilitate regional, transit, and bilateral trade amongst the participating countries and to provide better people-to-people connections to the entire region, said a press release issued on the same day.

“Today is a very important day for Pakistan and especially for Afghanistan and Uzbekistan Railways,” Khawaja Saad Rafiq Federal Minister for Railways said.

“It is a historic day for regional connectivity and we have laid the foundation for it,” he added.

The ambassadors of both Afghanistan & Uzbekistan and other high-level officials of the three countries participated in the ceremony.

The Joint Protocol was signed by three heads of the railways' authorities.

The Secretary/Chairman Pakistan Railways, Syed Mazhar Ali Shah, Director General and CEO of Afghanistan Railway Authority, Alhaj Bakhtur Rehman Sharaf and Head of Ministry of Investment, Industry and Trade and Department of Transport of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Mr. Dekhkanov D. T signed the document.

The event was witnessed by the Federal Minister of Railways Khawaja Saad Rafiq and Federal Minister of Finance, Senator Ishaq Dar at the Ministry of Railways Islamabad.

The line will support both passenger and freight services and would contribute to regional trade and economic growth.
