National Savings surge to Rs27bn in January

March 05, 2026 (MLN): Pakistan’s National Savings Schemes (NSS) posted a net mobilization of Rs27.01 billion in January 2026, rebounding sharply from Rs4.19 billion in December, according to provisional data from the Central Directorate of National Savings.

The month-on-month surge of 545% was led by inflows into Prize Bonds (Rs2.55 billion) and the “Others” category (Rs19.25 billion), while Defence Savings Certificates (DSC) and Special Savings Certificates (SSC-R) remained in negative territory at Rs-2.19 billion and Rs1.71 billion, respectively.

The rebound capped a volatile first half of FY2025-26, with NSS mobilization showing sequential declines from July (Rs44.17 billion) to December (Rs4.19 billion), before the January recovery.

On an annual basis, FY2025-26 mobilization totaled Rs183.12 billion, down 28.8% from Rs257.12 billion in FY2024-25.

Historically, NSS mobilization has been cyclical. The schemes peaked in FY2019-20 at Rs372.45 billion, before the COVID-era shocks drove net outflows in FY2020-21 (-Rs317.31 billion) and FY2021-22 (-Rs358.68 billion).

FY2022-23 also recorded a contraction of Rs381.87 billion, highlighting investor caution in periods of economic uncertainty.
