UAE bans fresh meat import from Pakistan by sea

September 20, 2023 (MLN): In a major setback, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has banned the import of fresh meat from Pakistan with effect from October 10, 2023, through the sea route after authorities discovered fungus on one of the consignments.

It is worth noting that the import of fresh meat by sea contributes significantly, bringing in $12 million per month to the national exchequer.

Speaking to Mettis Global, Faisal Hussain, CEO of The Organic Meat Company (PSX: TOMCL), pointed out that the UAE has specifically banned the import of fresh meat via sea routes. However, he emphasized that Pakistan still can export the same product by air.

When asked about the fungus issue discovered in the consignment, he mentioned that it appears to be a supply chain-related problem, and it would be premature to assign blame to any specific department without a thorough investigation.

Additionally, he refrained from disclosing the company's name until a proper investigation was conducted.
