Stronger UN ties on climate & development emphasized by PM

February 14, 2025 (MLN): The need to further strengthen collaboration with the United Nations in the areas of sustainable development and climate change was emphasised by Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif.
He reaffirmed Pakistan’s strong political commitment to combating climate change in close partnership with the international community and the UN.
The prime minister made these remarks during a meeting with UN Resident Coordinator in Pakistan, Mohamed Yahya, who paid a courtesy call on him, as APP reported.
He lauded the efforts of the UN Country Team in Pakistan and acknowledged the pivotal role played by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in mobilizing global support for Pakistan during the devastating 2022 floods.
Highlighting the significance of climate financing, PM Shehbaz underscored the need for developed nations to fulfill their commitments to address the impacts of climate change.
He reiterated Pakistan’s resolve to work closely with the UN on climate-related initiatives, ensuring the implementation of various projects aimed at environmental sustainability.
The prime minister also stressed the urgency of bridging the financing gap to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Additionally, he called for increased representation and voice for developing nations in international financial institutions through reforms in the global financial architecture.
The meeting was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Muhammad Ishaq Dar, Minister for Economic Affairs Division Ahad Khan Cheema, and Minister for Planning Ahsan Iqbal.
SAPM Syed Tariq Fatemi, PM’s Coordinator for Climate Change Ms. Romina Khursheed Alam, and other senior government officials were also present.
