SPI falls for third consecutive week

December 10, 2021 (MLN): The weekly Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI) for the combined group witnessed a drop for the third consecutive week, going down by 0.07% WoW for the week ended December 09, 2021, weekly data released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) showed on Friday.

As per the PBS inflation report, the decline was mainly on account of a drop in the price of LPG and essential food items.

The combined index clocked in at 167.24 compared to 167.36 on December 2, 2021,

However, the year-on-year trend depicts an increase of 18.58% when the index was recorded at 141.04 a year ago, on December 10, 2020.

Out of the 51 monitored items, the average price of 9 items decreased weekly including tomatoes that witnessed a drop of 13.37%, chicken by 10.59%, potatoes by 4.48%, LPG by 2.96%, sugar by 1.03%, gur by 0.5%, mustard oil by 0.27%, eggs by 0.26% and wheat flour by 0.46%, whereas the prices of 23 items registered no change during the week.

Meanwhile, the average price of 19 items registered an increase in the week that include bananas, onions, pulse masoor, pulse mash, pulse gram, pulse moong, cooking oil and washing soap.

The weekly SPI percentage change by income groups showed that SPI decreased across all quantiles ranging between 0.07% and 0.14%.

The lowest income group saw a weekly decline of 0.14% while the highest income group recorded a fall of 0.07%.

On a yearly basis, analysis of SPI change across different income segments showed that SPI increased across all quantiles ranging between 16.86% and 19.71%

Yearly SPI for the lowest income group increased by 19.71% while the highest income group recorded an increase of 19.07%.

The average price of sona urea stood at Rs1,910 per 50 kg bag which is 0.13% lower than last week’s price and 11.92% higher when compared to last year.

Going by the PBS report, the average cement price was recorded at Rs742 per 50 kg bag, depicting a decline of 0.03% WoW, while increasing by 28.4% YoY.
