September 14, 2018 (MLN): In an address to the civil servants earlier today, Prime Minister Imran Khan spoke about the challenges currently faced by the country, highlighting the role of bureaucrats in tackling these issues and seeking their help in implementing his agendas.

Shedding light on areas of concern, he told that the country’s loans have risen from Rs.6 trillion to Rs.30 trillion and on a daily basis, the country is paying Rs.6 billion in debt and interest payment.

He expressed his displeasure, saying that Pakistan is a classic example of a country stuck in a debt trap. He further stressed on the need for a change in people’s mind sets saying that continuing down this path, Pakistan will not be able to divert the upcoming disaster.

“The assets that we have developed are being used to fund our debts instead of creating wealth for us,” he added, pointing out that “the Orange Train Project that was constructed on loans is now running in deficit.”

Drawing attention to the financial divide within the nation, he informed that 8 lakh students are currently enrolled in English medium schools, 4 crore students in Urdu medium schools while 2.5 crore kids do not attend school at all.

Laying further emphasis on the subject, he added that “we have created divide amongst our people, just like the British ruling elite did before the partition, leading luxurious lives at the expense of their slaves’ hard earned money”

Coming to the root of the problem, the prime minister addressed the issue of corruption that has decayed the country’s institutions over the past many years.

He asked the civil servants to carry out their duties regardless of their political affiliation and to remain true to their country.

Praising the bureaucratic system within the country he added that, “Bureaucracy in Pakistan is one of the best in Asia.” He also promised to protect the bureaucracy within the country and saying that they will not succumb to political pressure.

He spoke on the subject of administration, saying that his government does not favor speedy transfers as it disrupts the whole system. He also acknowledged that the salaries of the civil servants were low and the salary structure of the Bureaucracy will be reviewed.

He further added that the country just needs two years of good governance after which, hefty investment will be witnessed within the country.
