PBS to conduct separate price survey for rural areas

September 4, 2019 (MLN): The Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) has released latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) for August 2019 with the updated base year i.e. 2015-16. In the next few months the PBS will continue to release data for both the old base year i.e. 2007-08 and new base year 2015-16).

According to PBS, at least one market from each division has been added to the price survey. Moreover, a separate price survey will be conducted for rural areas, as currently PBS measures prices of 487 items collected from 76 markets in 40 cities across Pakistan. This represents only the urban consumption basket at the exclusion of the 62% of rural households.

Consequently, three separate databases of CPI will be developed representing price statistics for urban, rural and national level.
