April 23, 2025 (MLN): In a landmark move towards sustainable development, Pakistan has officially launched its inaugural Green Sukuk, signaling its commitment to climate-conscious financing.

The ceremony, held at the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX), was graced by key figures from the financial and regulatory sectors.

Speaking at the event, Advisor to the Finance Minister, Mr. Khurram Schehzad said, “With the inaugural Green Sukuk, Pakistan signals a firm commitment to the global green finance movement.  This step reflects our intent to align financial flows with sustainable development goals.”

Also present on stage were Chairperson of PSX Shamshad Akhtar, Managing Director of PSX Farrukh Sabzwari, Director Debt at the Ministry of Finance, Eraj Hashmi, along with Rabia Ahmed from the Debt Management Office.

The launch was attended by PSX directors, institutional imvestors, including top bank treasurers, asset management companies, insurance, DFIs, brokers, market makers, HNWIs, and stakeholders from across the capital markets ecosystem.

This Green Sukuk, structured to support environmentally sustainable projects, marks Pakistan's official entry into the green Islamic finance space. It is aimed at attracting both domestic and international investors interested in supporting low-carbon and climate-resilient infrastructure.

The move is being seen as a strategic milestone in broadening Pakistan’s capital markets and reinforcing investor confidence in sustainable public finance initiatives.
