November 20, 2024 (MLN): The National Disaster Risk Management Fund (NDRMF) and the Center for Climate Diplomacy of Pakistan (CCDP) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to enhance climate resilience in Pakistan through research, training, and innovation.
The agreement was signed during the COP29 global climate conference in Baku on Wednesday, with the Prime Minister's Coordinator on Climate Change Romina Khurshid Alam in attendance.
The MoU, signed by Bilal Anwar of the NDRMF and Amna Munawwar Awan of the CCDP, aims to enhance climate resilience through research, training, and innovation, said a press release.
Speaking on the occasion, Amna Munawwar highlighted the focus on collaborative research to tackle Pakistan's climate challenges and the launch of training programs for professionals and communities.
A key initiative is the establishment of an innovation virtual lab for young entrepreneurs and students to develop climate solutions.
She mentioned that the partnership will also enhance international climate finance coordination and explore emerging technologies like AI and blockchain to improve disaster response.
Amna Munawwar emphasized the importance of regional cooperation to manage transboundary climate risks, recognizing that climate change transcends national borders.
She stated, “The collaboration aims to position Pakistan as a leader in global climate policy discussions, advocating for equitable resource access and sustainable development goals.
"This initiative marks a significant step in building climate resilience in Pakistan, fostering innovation, and empowering communities against climate change impacts", she added.
