January 07, 2025 (MLN): To unlock the full potential of satellite technology for national growth Pakistan needs to align its policies with global standards.
This was stated by Minister of State for Information Technology and Telecommunication, Shaza Fatima Khawaja during a meeting, as per the press release issued.
The meeting aimed to review the progress on Starlink’s licensing and regulatory frameworks for Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite.
It was decided that consultant hiring would be completed in a few weeks, for regulations.
Discussions centered on accelerating these processes to establish a strong regulatory framework for LEO satellites, fostering improved connectivity, and promoting technological innovation.

Low-earth orbit satellites provide satellite-based internet services, which can provide continuous broadcast or data coverage even in remote areas where radio towers or fiber cable networks are not present.
About six operators are currently providing satellite-based internet services globally, and new players are also entering the field; these include Starlink, Amazon, Oneweb, and a Chinese operator.
Meanwhile, sources in the National Space Agency (NSA) said that the Chinese company, too, has obtained information to enter Pakistan’s internet market.
