Scammers using fake electricity bill subsidy links to steal consumer data

May 22, 2026 (MLN): Pakistan's Power Division has warned electricity consumers to beware of a fraudulent scheme in which hackers and criminals are using fake QR codes and bogus online links to steal personal information under the pretense of a government electricity bill subsidy.

Consumers are being lured into clicking suspicious links and submitting their details through a four-step process, after which they are prompted to enter a six-digit verification code, a tactic described as illegal and malicious, according to a Power Division spokesperson, APP reported.

The spokesperson clarified that electricity subsidy-related information can only be entered on the electricity bill itself and cannot be submitted through any other digital or physical platform.

Consumers were strongly advised against sharing personal data online or on paper in connection with any subsidy offer.

The Power Division added that law enforcement agencies have been notified and are now looking into the activities of the criminal elements behind the scam.
