July 24, 2020 (MLN): Responding to NEPRA’s show-cause notice related to the matter of excessive load shedding in Karachi, the K-Electric said it will follow due process and respond to the authority within the stipulated period of 15 days.

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) said in a statement that its investigation committee constituted to look into in the matter of excessive load shedding in Karachi and had submitted its report.

In the light of findings of the Investigation Committee, the regulator issued a Show-Cause Notice to K-Electric on 21st July 2020.

The notice said if K-Electric fails to submit a reply in a specified time, unilateral action will be taken in which the license of the company will be suspended or revoked.

Taking to its Twitter handle, K-Electric said it appreciated the role of NEPRA in giving an opportunity to lay forth evidence as to why Load Management was carried out and the delay of certain projects.

Earlier, NEPRA took serious notice of K-Electric’s excessive load shedding complaints by holding a public hearing on July 10, 2020.

It may be worth highlighting that apart from prolonged power cuts, consumers have to suffer low voltage and power-tripping since June. KE has failed to provide non-discriminatory distribution services. Justifying this on its social media account, K-Electric informed that with the rising Mercury level in Karachi, the company’s peak demand had exceeded 3450 MW.

K-Electric has also been overcharging the consumers. In view of the current situation, NEPRA requested K-Electric consumers to contact to Karachi Regional Office for addressing their over-billing complaints.

Further, for the convenience of the consumers, the authority decided the Karachi Regional Office will remain open on Saturdays and Sundays as well.
