The newly elected Prime Minister, Imran Khan, in his first meeting with British officials since his general election, told them that his government is going to strive towards bringing back the money laundered to Britain.

In his meeting with the British High Commissioner Thomas Drew, he said that he was going to retrieve the wealth robbed from his country and hoarded in the UK by corrupt Pakistani politicians.

On Thursday, the UK said that it would “work constructively” with the new leader.

Britain has recently brought in a new anti-corruption legislation that is designed to target oligarchs and international crime. The legislation is an attempt by its' government to combat money laundering and corruption that has given London its reputation as a safe haven for dirty money parked in the country through shell companies in weakly-regulated jurisdictions.

Provided there is evidence to support the allegations, the legislation could be used to freeze or seize property and assets that are bought with illegal or unexplained wealth, says a report from the Telegraph.

“Tackling corruption is a UK government priority and we will continue to work constructively with Pakistan on this issue,” a spokesman for the British High Commission was quoted as saying. He said that Britain has robust laws “for the recovery of illicit assets where there is evidence to do so.”
