Electricity subsidy policy under review, restriction proposed

February 26, 2025 (MLN): In a crucial discussion on the country's electricity subsidy policy, officials from the Ministry of Finance briefed the Senate Standing Committee on Finance during a meeting chaired by Saleem Mandviwalla.

The officials stated that the proposal is to limit the electricity subsidy only to the beneficiaries of the Benazir Income Support Program (BISP).

They further informed that the Ministry of Finance, the Power Division, and relevant companies are working on this objective.

Senator Anusha Rehman opposed the subsidy, stating that there should be no subsidy on electricity, as per the press release issued today.

She criticized the policy, saying, "After poor women, you now want to turn the entire nation, including men, into beggars."

A committee member emphasized that those who can afford electricity should pay their bills.

The committee also discussed resolving the issue of outstanding dues amounting to Rs33 billion under electricity subsidies for Karachi's industries.

Officials from the Ministry of Finance informed that the matter is currently pending in court.

They further stated that K-Electric has obtained a stay order from the court regarding this issue.
