China, Pakistan to build 5th nuclear power plant

June 20, 2023 (MLN): China and Pakistan on Tuesday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), or a pre-contract deal, for the $4.8 billion plant at Chashma in Pakistan's central Punjab province, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif informed while addressing an event in Islamabad.

To recall, China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) signed a cooperation agreement with the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) for the construction of Unit 5 of Chashma Nuclear Power Plant (C-5) in 2017.

According to that agreement, CNNC was supposed to build a one-million-kilowatt-class nuclear power unit with HPR 1000 technology at the Chashma Nuclear Power Plant in Pakistan.
