World Bank to inject $100m into Punjab's housing scheme

June 08, 2026 (MLN): Punjab's Apni Chhat, Apna Ghar housing programme is set to receive $100 million in World Bank funding, as the global lender expressed interest in joining the provincial government's flagship low-income housing initiative.

The development came during a meeting chaired by Provincial Housing Minister Bilal Yasin, where the Director General of PHATA and the Project Director briefed participants on the Punjab Affordable Housing Programme.

The meeting also approved a restructuring of the programme to streamline its implementation, APP reported.

Officials said the proposed World Bank support was expected to accelerate housing construction across Punjab and strengthen the government's capacity to meet its targets.

Bilal Yasin said eligible households across different districts would be provided interest-free loans of Rs1.5 million per family to construct their own homes, adding that the initiative had already yielded positive results for low-income families.

He said the government aimed to construct 100,000 houses annually, which would significantly improve living standards and ensure dignified shelter for underprivileged segments of society.

The meeting also discussed proposals to expand the programme and broaden its outreach to more deserving families across the province.
