October 21, 2025 (MLN): The olive sector is emerging as a promising driver of Pakistan’s economic growth, with the potential to boost exports, achieve self-sufficiency in edible oil, and uplift rural livelihoods, according to Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Rana Tanveer Hussain.

Speaking at the Pakistan Olive Summit 2.0 on Tuesday, the minister emphasized that Pakistan holds immense potential in olive cultivation, which could transform the agriculture landscape and contribute significantly to the national economy.

He highlighted that olive farming not only promotes sustainable agriculture but also creates employment opportunities and strengthens rural communities.

The minister noted that olive oil could become Pakistan’s next major export brand, helping the country earn valuable foreign exchange while encouraging eco-friendly agricultural practices. “We will make olive the identity of Pakistan,” he stated confidently, adding that the sector’s growth could secure the nation a leading position in the regional olive market.

To enhance productivity, the government plans to train farmers in modern olive cultivation techniques and promote active participation of the private sector. Rana Tanveer emphasized that public-private partnerships, coupled with modern research and advanced technologies, could exponentially increase olive production.

He reiterated that sustainable agriculture and food safety remain top national priorities, with vast opportunities available for investors interested in the olive industry. “Safe and sustainable food is the guarantee of Pakistan’s future, and the olive industry will open new avenues of prosperity for the country,” he said.

The minister also called upon young farmers to actively engage in olive farming, noting their crucial role in promoting agricultural innovation and ensuring long-term sectoral growth.

With strategic policy support, technological advancement, and collaboration between stakeholders, Pakistan’s olive industry could soon emerge as a key contributor to national exports and rural economic development.
