April 6, 2026 (MLN):  Pakistan is stepping up efforts to attract Russian tourists, as it aims to host 50,000 visitors annually and generate up to $1 billion in revenues.

Global travel patterns shift and Russian outbound tourism declines from 24 million before 2022 to 15 millionin recent times.

The country hopes to position itself as a safe, affordable, and attractive alternative amid restrictions in Europe, North America, and instability in parts of the Middle East.

Ambassador to Russia Faisal Niaz Tirmizi said Russian travelers are increasingly seeking destinations that combine security, accessibility, and value.

He suggested that Pakistan could start with small groups through tour operators and gradually expand to the 50,000-target, tapping into the strong spending potential of Russian tourists, who typically spend $1,000–$5,000 on one- to two-week trips, according to APP.

Ambassador Tirmizi highlighted discussions with Russian officials, including Andrey Ignatyev, who noted Pakistan’s growing appeal.

He emphasized the northern areas Hazara Division, Skardu, and Hunza as prime spots for adventure and cultural tourism.

The ambassador also stressed the importance of global promotion, improving aviation connectivity, and enhancing perceptions of safety to fully leverage the opportunity.

Recent government initiatives, including the Green Pakistan program, have boosted tourism infrastructure, while easing visa procedures and introducing the online “Tourism on the Palm” system have simplified travel for international visitors.

In 2025, Pakistan welcomed over one million foreign tourists, with destinations like Gilgit-Baltistan gaining international recognition from outlets such as BBC and CNN.

With strategic planning, timely investment, and coordinated promotion, Pakistan aims to capitalize on shifting global tourism trends and become a preferred destination for Russian and other international travelers.
