February 19, 2026 (MLN): Pakistan Railways is set to launch a reform package aimed at transforming the department into a profitable, modern and passenger-centric national transport system, with a strong focus on revitalizing freight operations, expanding passenger services and upgrading railway infrastructure across the country.

The wide-ranging measures are designed to ensure long-term financial sustainability by strengthening the freight sector.

New freight wagons have been added to the fleet, while dedicated freight corridors are under development to speed up cargo movement. Steps are also being taken to improve cargo handling, reduce turnaround time and build strategic partnerships with major bulk clients, according to an official from the Ministry as reported by APP.

The department has introduced online freight booking, expanded freight and cargo train operations, and outsourced freight wagons to improve efficiency.

As a result, the average freight payload has increased from 1,800 tons in 2023 to 2,400 tons in 2024, marking a significant operational improvement.

On the passenger side, operations are running at full capacity. The number of coaches on key trains has been increased from 15 to 19, and 10 new passenger trains have been launched in recent months.

Modern dining cars and refurbished coaches have been introduced on major trains, while LED screens with pre-loaded entertainment, water dispensers and enhanced cleaning services are being provided to improve onboard comfort.

Premium dining cars are now operational on additional routes, and seven premium trains are offering complimentary services including high tea, bedding, newspapers, hygiene kits and mineral water.

The reform agenda also includes major upgrades to station facilities. Escalators have been installed at key stations in Karachi and Lahore, while information desks and free Wi-Fi services have been introduced at stations handling nearly 80 percent of passenger traffic nationwide.

To ensure improved cleanliness standards, agreements have been signed with leading municipal waste management companies in Karachi, Lahore, Rawalpindi, Faisalabad and Multan. Waiting halls at major stations in Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar and Rawalpindi have also been modernized as part of the nationwide upgrade plan.
