March 13, 2026 (MLN): Petroleum product prices will remain unchanged in Pakistan despite rising global oil prices, after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif decided to maintain the current rates to ease the financial burden on the public, according to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).

The decision comes amid speculation that the government could further increase fuel prices tonight following the recent surge in international oil markets.

“No price hike is being made in order to reduce the burden on the common man,” the prime minister said, adding that the government would provide maximum relief to citizens in these challenging circumstances.

The move followed last week’s sharp hike, when the government raised petrol and diesel prices by Rs55 per litre in line with increasing global oil prices. After the increase, petrol climbed to Rs321.17 per litre, while diesel surged to Rs335.86 per litre.

International oil prices have been rising amid escalating tensions in the Middle East after the United States and Israel launched strikes in Iran, reportedly killing Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

In retaliation, Iran carried out strikes on Israel and US bases in Gulf countries and warned that vessels would not be allowed to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil shipping route.

Amid the surge in global prices, the government has also begun implementing energy conservation and austerity measures to reduce fuel consumption and ease pressure on the domestic fuel market.

The government has announced steps such as additional public holidays and restrictions on certain petroleum exports as part of a broader energy conservation plan.

Officials also introduced the idea of three holidays per week to reduce transport and energy demand during the period of heightened oil prices.

Despite the volatility in international markets, officials say the country currently holds sufficient oil reserves to meet domestic demand throughout March.

However, the government is closely monitoring the situation as fluctuations in global energy markets continue to influence local fuel pricing.
