February 10, 2026 (MLN): The National Electric Power
Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has approved a revised tariff schedule for
K-Electric consumers, bringing relief to residential customers across multiple
consumption slabs while the number of protected consumers has surged dramatically
over recent years.
According to the latest tariff comparison presented by NEPRA, K-Electric consumers in higher consumption brackets will see notable reductions in their variable rates.
The 301-400 units consumption slab saw its
variable rate decrease from Rs. 37.99/kWh to Rs. 36.46/kWh, a reduction of Rs.
1.53/kWh, though fixed charges increased from Rs. 200 to Rs. 400.
Similarly, consumers using 401-500 units will benefit from a
variable rate reduction from Rs. 40.20/kWh to Rs. 38.95/kWh, a decrease of Rs.
1.25/kWh, with fixed charges rising from Rs. 400 to Rs. 500.
The 501-600 units category saw rates decrease from Rs.
41.62/kWh to Rs. 40.22/kWh, a reduction of Rs. 1.40/kWh, while the 601-700
units slab dropped from Rs. 42.76/kWh to Rs. 41.85/kWh, down Rs. 0.91/kWh.
Consumers using above 700 units will see a slight reduction
from Rs. 47.69/kWh to Rs. 47.20/kWh, a decrease of Rs. 0.49/kWh
The revised tariff maintains protection for low-consumption
households, with consumers using 01-100 units in the protected category paying
Rs. 10.54/kWh with a fixed charge of Rs. 200, while those consuming 101-200
units pay Rs. 13.01/kWh with a fixed charge of Rs. 300.
Life Line consumers using up to 50 units continue to pay Rs. 3.95/kWh, while those consuming 51-100 units pay Rs. 7.74/kWh, both without any fixed charges.
In a significant development, data compiled by Power
Planning and Monitoring Company (PPMC) reveals that the number of
protected consumers in the 01-200 units category has nearly tripled from 9.45m
in 2022 to 21.55m in 2026, now representing 63% of total residential consumers
compared to just 34% four years ago.
The
The total number of residential consumers served by
K-Electric has grown from 28.2m in 2022 to 34.3m in 2026, with total DISCO
units decreasing from 52,405 MkWh to 51,675 MkWh.
The data shows a notable shift in consumption patterns, with
non-protected consumers in the 01-200 units category dropping dramatically from
32%, representing 9.07m consumers in 2022, to just 7%, representing 2.39m in
2026. Higher consumption categories such as 201-300 units and above have
remained relatively stable or seen only marginal changes.
The revised tariff structure aims to balance providing
relief to consumers while ensuring the financial sustainability of K-Electric's
operations.
The significant increase in protected consumers indicates
that a majority of residential electricity consumers are now consuming electricity within
subsidized brackets, which has important implications for both consumer welfare
and the utility's revenue structure.
