November 3, 2025 (MLN): Pakistan is set to save $13 billion over the next decade with the establishment of the country’s first Sea-to-Steel Green Maritime Industrial Corridor, a landmark initiative aimed at reviving Pakistan Steel Mills and transforming the nation’s industrial and maritime landscape.
The project will integrate Port Qasim’s operations with industrial activity, creating a continuous value chain from maritime logistics to steel manufacturing.
The initiative comes as part of a broader plan to modernize
Port Qasim, which recently earned recognition as the world’s ninth most
improved container port, improved its performance score by 35.2 points through
reduced cargo dwell time, streamlined berth operations, and adoption of digital
management tools.
The port is now expected to play a pivotal role in achieving Pakistan’s $100bn revenue target, leveraging its strategic location, industrial complex, and enhanced efficiency.
The corridor will link port operations directly with steel
production, facilitating efficient cargo handling, ship recycling, and
industrial output.
In the second phase, the Iron Ore and Coal Berth (IOCB)
terminal will oversee the revival of steel production, while an Integrated
Maritime Industrial Complex (IMIC) will connect ship recycling facilities with
steel manufacturing, enhancing domestic output and generating employment.
The Sea-to-Steel Corridor will adopt green maritime and
industrial practices, incorporating energy-efficient technologies and
environmentally friendly infrastructure.
It aligns with the government’s vision of transforming Port
Qasim into a regional trade and industrial hub capable of driving long-term
economic growth, attracting both local and foreign investment through the Port
Qasim Special Economic Zone (PQSEZ).
The project also includes the development of new
multipurpose and container terminals, improved dredging, digital management
systems, and enhanced connectivity via upgraded road, rail, and communication
networks to reduce logistics costs and strengthen Pakistan’s trade
competitiveness.
Energy and industrial projects, including LNG terminals and
power plants within the port area, will further contribute to the country’s
energy security and industrial expansion.
The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and the Ministry of
Industries will jointly implement the Steel-to-Green Sea Project,
ensuring sustainable industrial development and positioning the corridor as a
central driver of Pakistan’s revenue growth, industrialization, and green
maritime initiatives.
By linking maritime operations with steel production, the
initiative is expected to play a pivotal role in achieving the country’s
long-term economic and industrial objectives.
