Govt unveils plans to boost clinical trials sector

January 09, 2026 (MLN): The government of Pakistan is taking major
steps to accelerate the development of the country’s clinical trial sector, aims
to position Pakistan as a regional hub for clinical research.
The meeting was chaired by Federal
Minister for Health, Syed Mustafa Kamal, and attended by Chief Executive
Officer of the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP), Chief Executive
Officer of the National Institute of Health (NIH), Director General Health, and
Mr. Babar Saeed, Director of the Clinical Trial Unit, along with other senior
officials, according to a press release issued.
Addressing the meeting, Syed Mustafa Kamal highlighted
Pakistan’s potential to become a preferred destination for clinical trials.
He noted that amendments are being introduced in the DRAP
Bio-Study Rules to establish a regulatory framework that is transparent,
efficient, internationally compliant, and time-bound.
The Minister said that measures are being taken to promote
clinical trials, including the rapid rollout of a modern digital system to
ensure all applications are processed online, improving efficiency,
transparency, and ease of research.
It was also shared that a National Clinical Trials Summit will
be held in Pakistan, bringing together national and international experts,
institutions, stakeholders, Contract Research Organizations (CROs), and
sponsors to explore collaboration and showcase Pakistan’s research
capabilities.
Syed Mustafa Kamal reaffirmed the government’s commitment to
facilitating the introduction of new technologies and innovative medicines in
the local market, offering full support to international CROs and sponsors
conducting clinical trials in the country.
He concluded that these initiatives will strengthen
Pakistan’s global position in research and development, enhancing healthcare
outcomes and economic growth.
